Today before leaving FL I went to Juan Carlos Santana’s Institute of Human Performance in Boca, Raton to get a workout in.
Maybe you want 2012 to be the year you do your first triathlon. When most people hear the word triathlon their first thought is “I could NEVER do that and especially because of the swim”. Well, first let me tell you that triathlons come in all different distances. You have shorter ones called “sprint” triathlons. You have mid-distance triathlons called Olympic distance. And, then there is the famous Ironman- 2.4 mile swim/112 mile bike/26.2 mile run. There is also a half-Ironman. So, you can pick the one that is right for you.
Secondly, let me tell you about my experience training for my first sprint distance triathlon. I get the bright idea I want to do a triathlon. So, I get a book at the library with pre-made workouts. The first swim workout calls for a 300 meter warm-up. Easy enough. Wrong!!! I didn’t even make it 50 meters and I was gasping for air and had to stand up in the pool. And that is NO exaggeration. Swimming just for recreation or just to keep your head out of the water is totally different than swimming with your face in the water and turning your head every so often to get a breath of air. So, what did I do? I turned to the internet to learn how to “swim” and found the excellent site and resource www.totalimmersion.net. It is through their book and website that I was able to go on and complete not only my first triathlon but several others after that. Trust me if I could learn how to swim and not sink anyone can. Here is a picture of me finishing one of my first Olympic distance triathlons.
I have talked to quite a few people and none of them are making New Year Resolutions. And, that is ok. Goal setting is not for everyone. Or, possibly it is just not the right time for them. But, for those of you who are or who might be thinking about it I am in your corner. Over the next couple weeks I will be posting some pictures to get your creative juices flowing. What might you resolve in 2012 in regards to your health and fitness. I have been fortunate to have experienced many fun things in this realm and I want to share them with you and maybe even inspire you. Also, next week I will be unveiling my contest that will give you the chance to win 6 free personal training sessions with me to help you towards your goal. Here is a picture of me running in Kenya with some locals. It was pretty awesome although they smoked me. Maybe you are planning for a trip of a lifetime and you need to be in great physical shape to enjoy it? Or you hope to run your first 5k or marathon?
I want to encourage you today and let you know that it does not take a lot of money or equipment to get started on an exercise plan. In fact if you have a floor you can get started. One day I was pressed for time, I could not make it to the gym, and the weather was bad so I did my workout in the hallway pictured here. I did some lunge walks, push-ups, bodyweight squats, handwalks, buttkickers… If you need help let me know.
I want to introduce you to an online tool that can help educate you nutritionally, track your calories, as well as, help you stay accountable. I am not a believer in calorie counting as an effective long-term weight loss strategy simply because most people can not maintain it for extended periods of time. But, I am a believer in logging your foods (calorie counting ) from anywhere between 4-12 weeks to become more AWARE of what you eat and just how many calories you do eat per day or how many calories are in that Chipotle burrito. The site is www.myfitnesspal.com. There is also an app for your smart phone.
If I said it once I have said it 1000 times. There are a few key ingredients to successfully accomplishing a goal or any worthy feat. And, one of those is accountability. As you think of your 2012 New Year Resolutions not only do you need a plan of action but you also need someone to be accountable to as you work your plan. Who will that be for you? It may be a friend, spouse (not always the best idea)
, a personal trainer, a coach,…
Now what?? If you are like my boys in the photograph you will play with all of your new toys. But, for most of us Thanksgiving has come and gone and Christmas with all the holiday parties is over. But, one thing that is not gone is the weight you may have gained and the sluggish feeling you experience when you get out of bed or about halfway through your day. I love this time of year because many start to make New Year Resolutions and that often means better health, weight loss, get fit, tone up… Over the next several blogs I am going to be encouraging you in these endeavors and in the first week of January I will be unveiling a contest that will give you the opportunity to win some personal training program design and goal setting from me.
